If you want to learn more about your competition, you need to learn a different way to communicate with your clients (and potential clients).  Unfortunately, most salespeople, managers, supervisors, or upper-level executives have ever been taught the secrets of "Persuasive Presentations" much less leadership interviewing techniques.

Unless you know HOW to get others to share their information, you are forced into "reaction mode" when dealing with your competitors or a sudden change in the market.  You can either act on a situation, or react to a situation. The latter is also known as "crisis management" or "damage control".  It's always better to be pro-active rather than reactive, and knowing about your competitors gives you this advantage.
